Setting up as a Virtual Assistant
Virtual assistant contract
Having a contract in place is absolutely essential, not only to protect you but also to protect your clients. It also allows you to set out your boundaries and gives you a place to refer to should anything ever go wrong (which is very rare!).
Virtual Assistant Insurance
As a business owner we need professional indemnity insurance to cover ourselves and our business in the unlikely event that something goes wrong and a client takes legal action.
Business bank account
As a sole trader, you can open a regular current account, it does not have to be a business account. But I would HIGHLY recommend that you open one right at the start to make your end of year accounts much easier.
I use Get Coconut as it has a really handy tax calculator and you can easily store receipts with a photo, so you don’t need to keep the box of receipts any more!
Register with the ICO
If you process any personal information as a business owner (which we as Virtual Assistants do), you need to be registered with the ICO for GDPR purposes.

Zoom - video meetings
I don’t think any business owner could have lived without Zoom during 2020 and it is a staple tool that is here to stay. Virtually meet clients for discovery calls, meetings, catch ups etc
LastPass - Password storage
Securely store all of your passwords and clients can share their passwords with you without you ever knowing what it is. You only have to remember one password now forever.
Loom - Screen recorder
Loom is a tool I genuinely couldn’t live without in my business. I use it to show a client the work I have done and talk them through any elements or ask them a question that is easier to explain in words and showing your screen.
